The following may only be relevant to those who work within the world of education, though its implications extend to every area of the growing online world. Via BBC News, I because aware of yet another rediculous American patent lawsuit, in this instance relating to a Learning Management System (LMS) called Desire2Learn. I myself have never used this LMS. I have however had dealings with Banner, Blackboard and WebCT. None of these systems present any ideas or technologies that in my opinion extend beyond common sense. In fact, their implimentations of most of their functionality are laugable at best, with rediculous requirements, rubbish backend coding and a total lack of future-proofing and flexibility.
Open source alternatives do exist, and I have tried a few, namely those mentioned in the BBC News article (Moodle) which started the rant. They are not perfect, but at least they try. They welcome with open arms any submissions which help them to get that little bit closer to the unachievable goal of “perfection”.
Litigation helps no one in these cases. You may aswell have a patent on fucking breathing in and out. It’s absurd. And it pisses me off.
